This activity is designed to familiarize the learner with the concepts of strike and dip, to make further studies of faults and fault models easier. It also introduces learners to a few key elements of seismology, which will be seen again later in much greater detail. Knowledge of how to solve basic trigonometric equations is needed for this activity. To describe a fault plane in simple terms, geologists refer to its strike and dip, the directional bearing of the plane's intersection with the surface, and the angle of the plane's slope. Knowing the strike and dip of a fault are often necessary for finding solutions to problems in structural geology. The activity takes the learner through a tutorial about finding the strike and dip of a fault, and then provides the opportunity to use this knowledge to answer a series of questions.
