The highest levels of community college administration face significant challenges in supporting technology programs at their institutions. For economic development in their region, a skilled workforce is critical in high tech sectors such as IT, manufacturing, electronics, engineering technology, and biotechnology. To be responsive to those industry sectors, presidents and deans recognize the need to support and maintain the currency of their technology education programs. However, enrollments in many programs are suffering and the cost of expensive laboratory equipment and infrastructure may force a CEO's decision to limit the college’s support. A panel of community college presidents and deans will address these challenges, explore the issue of sustainability, and respond to the over-arching question, “Will technology education programs as we know them disappear or be replaced by new models for workforce and economic development? ”It is time to begin a conversation on what i’s happening in technician education at Community Colleges.
