Art in Early Childhood Education

This course introduces the early childhood educator to the principles, methods and materials for teaching music, movement, visual arts, and dramatic play in an early childhood setting. Further, this course will help students understand how the arts are essential to making early learning meaningful and engaging. Art in all its varied forms appeals to the senses. Exploring the world through the senses is the way young children learn naturally. By engaging the senses through art, children are able to see the world in all its beauty and complexity. This course is taught from a developmental perspective. That means that students will learn how to create art projects that are appropriate for the age and development of the children. Students will become familiar with theory behind various forms of art in the early childhood classroom, as well as research-based practices for incorporating art into the classroom. Teaching in inclusive, multicultural, and multilingual settings will be stressed.
