Pedagogical Approach

This course is designed to be facilitated either fully online or through a blended modality. It can be easily converted to a face to face course by making resources available to students during class time. 

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, students will be able to:

• Identify influences on development and positive relationship with children.
• Recognize the different kinds of families and the appropiate way of adressing challenging behaviors.
• Describe different factors affecting young children (0-8)
• Classify families in how they care and educate undertanding they are  the “parent as the child’s first teacher”.
• Evaluate factors in socialization such as inequity and diversity, classism, generalized racism.
• Explain difference between  attachment and bonding
• Define how the development of children (0-8) reflects behavioral patterns that show the push toward becoming a separate individual.

Assessment

Module 1:

After reading the resources for this week and watching the video above, you should have a good idea about what makes up the different systems in an Ecological Model. For your introduction to the class, and to your peers, you are going to create your own ecological model and upload into the Blog. You can create your model either electronically, through the use of Word, Powerpoint, etc, or you can make one at home and upload an image. The image must be clear enough for all your peers to see. Explain your model to the class. Sometimes, explanations are expressed better verbally than in writing so feel free to use Youtube! 

Module 2: 

After reading through the module, please respond to the following questions:

1. Do you think it is important that parents discuss gender roles with their young children, or is gender a topic better left for later? How do parents consider gender norms when buying their children books, movies, and toys? How do you believe they should consider it? (2.5 pts)
2. Based on your observations, when are adolescents more likely to listen to their parents or to their peer groups when making decisions? What types of dilemmas lend themselves toward one social agent over another? (2.5 pts)

Module 3: 

Community Reflection #2: Response to Video: After watching the video and understanding more about Attachment and Trust, can you identify any instances where the opportunity for attachment was either addressed or missed? How can you improve your own attachment with your children or help parents’ foster healthy attachment with their own children?

Module 4:

Use the readings, power point, and this article to complete the activity for this week. After reviewing all the data, what do you think would be common parent concerns regarding play-based curriculum? What could you tell parents? What can you tell them about play-based curriculum and how it supports autonomy? What would you tell parents about their concern? What would you tell parents about how play-based curriculum supports autonomy?

Module 5:

Use the data from Module 4 and 5 to complete this week's activity. You are going to create a one page parent-newsletter describing the different types of play, why they are important, and how they support the development of critical skills children will need later in life. You can create your newsletter using microsoft word, powerpoint, publisher, etc. Use last week's Wiki to develop and FAQs section. Your FAQ section must include at least three questions and answers.
