SOCIAL STUDIES ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS Interactive site for analyzing political cartoons. Provides explanations of techniques used in various cartoons in addition to more detailed information about the cartoon and cartoonist for each. Appropriate for both Social Studies and English/Language Arts. The site also provides a comprehensive list of standards the activity covers (Common Core and State), broken down by subject and grade level.

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS A long list of authors willing to Skype with classes. Getting to talk with an author provides a multitude of opportunities for learning and helps gets students more engaged in reading. Would need to have Skype availalbe in your classroom.

MATHEMATICS Click on the link to go to the new site which has modules described as: Interactive online units that target objectives identified as important in state and national standards, include lesson plans, contain interactive online activities, and provide online assessments. Each eModule is intended to cover between one and three class periods of instruction. Virtual manipulatives for a huge variety of concepts in K-12 math. Linked to standards (national and state). Fairly easy to intuit and use (depending on grade level of student). Can be used in a variety of ways - instruction, assessment, concept reinforcement, teacher led demo, 1:1 exploration, small group, etc...

SOCIAL STUDIES Extensive resource that allows students to explore the battle at Ft. Sumter. Viewers place themselves in Lincoln's position, consider the events that transpire, and choose a course of action at five critical junctures, called "problems." There are embedded hotlinks to more information, making it more than just a chronological exploration. There are also biographies and video clips. Students are encouraged to write what they would do at each juncture and then read what Lincoln actually did.

SCIENCE (CHEMISTRY) Virtual lab lets students combine chemicals and observe the reactions in real time. Includes numerous problems/labs for students to complete or could be used for teacher-created or student-created problems. Not super-intuitive, but there is a demo problem that includes a nice walk-through of how to use various features of the stock lab. Note: uses Java - Despite having the latest Java version, I could not get it to load. I had to download it and use it offline (which worked fine). Try this one on a school machine first! Note 2: The parent site, Chem Collective, has a ton of chemistry related materials and links.

SCIENCE (HEALTH) Interactive "game" where students play the role of an intern who is the only one who can solve the epidemic outbreak. Problem solving and public health concepts are covered. Note: Requires Flash player to be up to date. Test first!

SCIENCE (PHYSICS/PHYSICAL SCIENCE) Extensive collection of simulations covering a wide variety of physical science concepts. Most correlate with High School standards, but many can also be used at the Middle School level (you may end up only using some features of the simualtion, for example).

MATHEMATICS (ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY) Free software - versions for every platform you can think of, including smart phones and tablets. Tons of free materials. On the one hand, GeoGebra is a dynamic geometry system--you can do constructions with points, vectors, segments, lines, conic sections as well as functions and change them dynamically afterwards; on the other hand, equations and coordinates can be entered directly. Note: Needs to be installed first (super quick and easy). Test first.
