Exercise

This assignment can be used as a supplemental activity at the end of a unit on
the oceans.

Students visit each of the four exhibits listed below:
Rocky Shore
Kelp Forest
Outer Bay
Monterey Deep Sea Canyon (find this exhibit under "past exhibits").
As they visit each
exhibit, their task is to describe each habitat including the following factors:
temperature (a rough, general estimate), sunlight, food sources, and marine
life living in the habitat.

Students are also provided with a copy of a vertical profile of ocean
environments. As they view each exhibit, they fill in each exhibit's name within
its proper ocean environment.

Topics

Earth Science, Oceanography, Biology/Ecology

Learning Objectives

Students will understand how the distribution of marine life changes as an inverse function of depth.
